Shamelessly stealing this. ♥
Leave a comment, and I'll tell you whatever pops into my mind about you when I read it- what I associate you with, what you make me feel like, whatever random thing it may be.

I dunno, you've always made me smile and laugh helplessly sometimes, and you were the very first person to make me a fanmix and art for any of my stories! No lie, when I saw it in SDS, I actually burst out into little overwhelmed tears, so I'm always always always going to think about that mix and art!♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Date: 21 Oct 2010 08:05 (UTC)speaking of geeky picture things, i am sitting like the last girl at the party over in the Macy thread, playing with pics for the Nic-in-the-Killjoys-AU. And is it wrong that I think Nic would be a hotass with purple hair? (http://hector-rashbaum.livejournal.com/315274.html?thread=1279370#t1279370)

(And eee! I'm glad to hear that you're excited! I love that dynamic so much)

Date: 22 Oct 2010 03:25 (UTC)(one of these days I'm actually going to write up my thoughts about how mike is characterized in skippy fic vs with Tom - but I promise I'm not bringing preconceptions to your fic!)
no subject
Date: 22 Oct 2010 03:35 (UTC)And there is a difference! But I think it's because of that whole drama and angst from when Tom left...there were so many differing stories and so much mud-slinging, on both sides, that it's a different dynamic. It's always easier to write drama, angst, and assholery. And I'm pretty sure that both of them were assholes about it. If I had to guess, I would say that the two of them are so similar that they rub against each other in the wrong way.
And as far as Mike in skippy stuff, he has to be a different guy, really. But, I think that can be chalked up to age, and the fact that Mike got clean (as far as I know, he's clean, at least) a little while ago. I'm willing to place money on the fact that the Mike of now is A TON different than the Mike of 2005, but I don't think there should be so much skewing of the personality. But then again, it's all about who the character of a person is paired with...Mike with Kevin is a different breed of fic than Mike with Tom.
But I think maturity goes a long way for both of them, and it has been five years now, which is a moderate block of time in which a person matures. I think that's why I like the dynamics of Mike/Tom and Mike/Kevin more than some of the other bandom pairings? There's such an interesting push-pull dynamic.
and woooww, hi, ramble. *facepalm*

Date: 22 Oct 2010 03:46 (UTC)I love that the happy ending can be summed up as: Tom has Empires and TAI have Chiz
it's really interesting that you chalk it up to age - because I think part of my "theory" is that Mike in skippy fic is a bad-boy with a heart of gold - but more often than not in highschool - so maybe his characterization reflects his more mature self, but that's placed in a younger character (of course the necessity of AU for getting Mike & Kevin to meet must be responsible for some of this trend)
hmm...I'm not sure that made sense. But basically it seems like in TAI fic he is a bad guy (or maybe just an complicated asshole) while in skippy fic he's not an asshole, everyone just thinks he is! (seriously - the number of fic that start with Kevin being scared of him is kinda a lot)

Date: 22 Oct 2010 03:59 (UTC)(of course the necessity of AU for getting Mike & Kevin to meet must be responsible for some of this trend)
Ahahaha, I think they might be closer to meeting than people realize? Tony Marino, the guy who used to tour manage TAI (back in Tom's day, even!) tour manages the Jonas Brothers and recently played softball with the Jonas Brothers. Also, there's the Pete Wentz Factor. (If they've met him, they can meet anyone in bandom. XD)
And no, that did make sense!
That too, but I think some of it is that people like the characterization and stereotype of bad-boy with a heart of gold. Sort of like how everyone loved the stereotype Gabe-Or-Bert is always the bad guy. But the age thing is something that you have to take into account, I think. Like, Mike is ONLY three years older than me, barely at that. (He was born in December of 84, I'm in May of 87)
And I know from 2005, when I graduated, to now, I've done a lot of growing up, and I would think, someone in his position of being on tour and writing albums, and being so close to a particular group of people...yeah, I think there is a certain amount of maturing from growing up and growing older. I mean, in 2005, Mike and Tom were, what? 21ish? IF that? (And hell, look at Sisky!)
I don't think Mike being a complicated asshole is really a bad thing! It's a depth to his character, at least, which is rare in some people in fic. And Skippy fic, yeah. But granted, that, I think, is to be chalked up more to Kevin's characterization. And okay, yes, I freely admit that for a while there, Mike Carden was kind of creepy serial-killer looking. (Not to say I didn't love him for it, but SERIOUSLY, DR. FEAR IS FUCKING CREEPY)
But with Kevin, I think a lot of people see it as...he's on Disney, he wears a purity ring, he's the son of a pastor and thinks Insta-Lamb. Not to say that he isn't on some levels, but it's a fall-back. Personally, I think that Kevin's been on tour enough and around enough people who are older than him (Garbo, anyone?) to expose him to a certain personality. The thing about it is that people seem to forget that Kevin had the benefit of going through school, you know?
I was a pretty naive kid, and even just from riding the bus...good lord, the amount of shit I heard in middle school was distressing sometimes! So I don't think Kevin is as innocent as he's written sometimes...but it is kind of fun to write Kevin as kind of jumpy around Mike, who I think is more blunt than anything, which comes across as being an asshole.

Date: 22 Oct 2010 04:29 (UTC)oh for sure, five years makes a *huge* difference! I just think it's interesting that authors are (at least in the high school Aus) writing him younger but with the maturity of his present self.
and I guess I figured that Kevin was home schooled (either because of religion or touring) so I never actually thought about what his experience there would have been - but yeah, if he went to high school, he can't be that innocent
no subject
Date: 22 Oct 2010 05:28 (UTC)Exactly!
And I'm not TOTALLY sure? I know that they started doing homeschooling around the same time they went on tour, if I'm remembering correctly? And I could be totally wrong, so, y'know, grain of salt, but if they started homeschooling around the same time they started touring then...their first album was released in 2006. So, taking into account when they were recording...he was 17-18. So he was at least in a few years of high school. Like I said, I'm not sure how much high school he was in, because I don't know how long he might have been home schooled...but I'd bet there was a bit of him actually going to real school, versus how much Joe and Nick went to.
