Some people are strangely territorial over Mike versus Tom etc. (when, really, you have to look at their ages, I think. And in a situation like that, with two volatile personalities, plus Bill...there wasn't a way for that to go well, I don't think. And with Tom not feeling like he could contribute and being unable to say, I don't feel like I can, it all equals into a lot of misread signals, I think. It was a situation that ended up in the best way it could, honestly. Tom has Empires and TAI have Chiz, who I do actually think is a better fit for them. [/end ramble])
And there is a difference! But I think it's because of that whole drama and angst from when Tom left...there were so many differing stories and so much mud-slinging, on both sides, that it's a different dynamic. It's always easier to write drama, angst, and assholery. And I'm pretty sure that both of them were assholes about it. If I had to guess, I would say that the two of them are so similar that they rub against each other in the wrong way.
And as far as Mike in skippy stuff, he has to be a different guy, really. But, I think that can be chalked up to age, and the fact that Mike got clean (as far as I know, he's clean, at least) a little while ago. I'm willing to place money on the fact that the Mike of now is A TON different than the Mike of 2005, but I don't think there should be so much skewing of the personality. But then again, it's all about who the character of a person is paired with...Mike with Kevin is a different breed of fic than Mike with Tom.
But I think maturity goes a long way for both of them, and it has been five years now, which is a moderate block of time in which a person matures. I think that's why I like the dynamics of Mike/Tom and Mike/Kevin more than some of the other bandom pairings? There's such an interesting push-pull dynamic.
