Sooo, this is for my Kevin Jonas ficfest (how weird is that to type, omggg!) and [livejournal.com profile] appending_doom prompted: "Superpowers and crimefighting, I suggest. (What's the most useless superpower Kevin could have? the ability to speak to but not necessarily control animals, methinks. Like Mati, but without the ability to summon one-fifth of Captain Planet)". My brain wouldn't let go of Kevin being able to grow things, sooo, it's a mish mash.

Title: Flowers And Old Fashioned Guys
Pairing: Kevin Jonas (Jonas Brothers)/Ryland Blackinton (Cobra Starship)
Rating: PG

Summary: He can grow a garden in fifteen minutes flat, and that's always neat. Besides, wrapping a bad guy up in some good old fashioned kudzu is satisfying, no matter what Joe says.
---Written for the Kevin Jonas ficfest going on in my journal!
DISCLAIMER: I OWN NOTHING AND NOBODY. PROMISE. :-D I just felt like writing some Kevin Jonas/Ryland Blackinton fic, because there's not enough of either. Also. I have no idea where that title came from. XD

Kevin pretty much hates when they have to fight. It's not the defending innocent people thing he minds, really, it's just the violence of it all. Joe gets into it, laughing like an idiot and almost slipping up and using their real names more than once. It's probably a good thing that Nick has some serious control over his pyrokinesis, or else Joe would be crispy. (After all, Joe still hasn't let them forget the time when Nick accidentally singed off Joe's eyebrows)

But the thing is that Kevin can manipulate plants.

No, really, it's actually kind of awesome.

It's not messing around with fire and it's not electricity bursts that Joe has, but it's nice. He can grow a garden in fifteen minutes flat, and that's always neat. Besides, wrapping a bad guy up in some good old fashioned kudzu is satisfying, no matter what Joe says.

There's others in their group; Demi, who can work with water and Selena who can heal them. It's a nice balance, but Kevin sometimes feels useless. Honestly, he's the guy with the plants, and that's it.

But he's also the only one willing to talk to the cops, and specifically Detective Blackinton, from Saporta's squad. He doesn't know why Nick hates talking to the cops, especially the squad that bails them out whenever they need it and knows who they really are. Kevin's pretty sure it has something to do with Saporta and his fondness for snakes or whatever.

It's when Kevin sits down in the interview chamber with Blackinton that he feels the familiar nerves tingle across his hands with the urge to create something. He can't create out of thin air, unfortunately but he can do plenty of things with existing (organic) material. Instead of asking for something plant-based, he fidgets, twirling his ring as Blackinton sits down, a fountain pen (an honest-to-god fountain pen) poised over his notebook.

"Okay, so tell me what happened this evening,"

"Got a call from the fire station that there was some creep starting little fires all over the place. Nothing dangerous, just annoying, until he escalated. Since Nick's got a tight leash on his own powers, we figured it'd be a quick in and out job. Showed up, and this guy is starting so many fires that we can barely suppress 'em. So we have Demi go in and try it out, get the practice. And. He um. The guy had hostages. Kids, you know. Kids with promise," Kevin says, twisting his mouth and grimacing.

Blackinton makes a sympathetic noise and tears off a sheet of paper, handing it over to him. Kevin's veins sing in anticipation of creating and he wants to resist so badly. But he simply can't, and that's why he starts tearing strips of paper, concentrating on flowers and simple leaves, just to get that crawling feeling out from under his skin.

"I tried to immobilize him, but he pretty much torched everything I created. So I teamed up with Demi, and she's still new enough that it was hard. And. A couple of kids got injured. And it's just. It's so futile sometimes, and I can't say I blame Joe for giving the guy a concussion with a blast, honestly. But we didn't create too much property damage so. Yeah."

Blackinton makes a few more notes in his notebook and when Kevin looks down at his hands, he's created three huge, hibiscus flowers, bright yellow and he can't help but smile. He knows that Nick and Joe think that maybe he's jealous of them for whatever powers they have, but honestly, when he looks at the blooms he can make, he can't be too upset.

"You guys are pretty amazing. Even with having to train Ms. Lovato," and Kevin arches an eyebrow as Blackinton grins and shrugs.

"Still on the clock, I gotta be professional,"

"Well, get off the clock and let's go have some coffee," Kevin says, concentrating harder than he has to normally (it's been a long day and he's tired), but he manages to tie off the bundle of flowers with a vine. Creating and giving them away is Kevin's favorite part of what he can do. He loves to watch people's faces light up as he presents them with a flower, even if it will revert after so long.

"How's your training coming along?" asks Blackinton as they walk past the front desk, Kevin barely remembering to hand the bouquet to the receptionist who gives him a delighted grin. The offices of FBR are so spacious and bright that it always seems weird that they don't have flowers everywhere, but the guy who heads the whole thing, Wentz, seems to be content to let Kevin take care of it.

"Eh. Haven't had much time to work on it with school and everything," he says as Blackinton eyes him and as they walk out, he loosens his tie.

"Kevin. You know you need to practice more with particulars," and the best part of Blackinton being off the clock is that he's no longer a cop, but Kevin's mentor, Ryland. Ryland's been training him since his powers flourished over a few parks. Ryland's powers are close enough to Kevin's that it makes it easy, only Ryland can control metal and shape it.

Kevin's always liked Ryland best, liked working with him, and creating together. If he's completely honestly, Kevin's sort of always had a crush on the other man. But they're professionals.

Or something like that.

"I know. It's just hard to do it with Joe bouncing around and doing those stupid energy pockets,"

"You need to get used to doing it in a less than controlled environment,"

"I know, I know. Can we practice back at your place?" Kevin says, looking over at Ryland and seeing the smile as they fall into easy conversation and a comfortable pace.

"Okay, now I want you to picture your favorite flower. Think about every vein in the petals, the way that it's heavy with pollen. Think about the stem going down into the roots, the way the roots are ready to be planted. Good. What color is your flower?"

"Yellow,"

"Make it blue. Change the color. Concentrate and think about the color flowing through the veins. Imagine it spreading like in time lapse photography. Focus harder on it, Kevin," and Ryland's voice is soothing and calm, but Kevin feels like he's going to collapse with a stroke by the time Ryland's watch beeps. Their session is up for the night and it's only been an hour, but Kevin's wrung out.

"Open your eyes and look," says Ryland, sounding slightly awed as Kevin opens his eyes. The flower (an orchid that reminds him of his Mom's gardens) is a brilliant yellow, but there are streaks of blue crawling through the petals. The stem goes down into stubby roots, which wasn't what he wanted exactly, but it's more progress than a clump.

"Oh my gosh," Kevin says softly, staring at the fragile flower, the wind stirring the petals gently. They're on top of Ryland's loft, the roof littered with metal sculptures, fragile creations that show Ryland's practice. There's a section of the roof devoted to Kevin practicing and while he watches the orchid settle into being, he smiles up at Ryland, suddenly delighted.

"I can plant it?"

"Absolutely," says Ryland, helping him dig the hole to plant it. The thing that sometimes hurts the most is when whatever Kevin creates stops living. It's like watching a piece of himself die and the feeling of it always hurts. Planting the flower into the warm, moist soil is like laying down to sleep, and he can't help but encourage it to grow, encouraging the roots to hold onto the soil.

"You did really great with that. Seriously, Kev," Ryland says as he pulls Kevin up. Their hands are dirty with soil, Ryland's hands firm and gentle as Kevin swallows hard. Looking up, Kevin feels a bead of sweat gather at the nape of his neck and when Ryland's eyes focus on his own, the bead slides down.

"Thanks. It um. Was all thanks to you,"

"Nah. I just told you how to get there. But you're the one creating," Ryland says, voice growing softer as he leans in, lips barely touching Kevin's as he speaks one last time.

"Don't think I'm taking advantage,"

"Never," Kevin breathes in anticipation as Ryland kisses him slowly, lips gently taking their time to relax him. Kevin's heart thrums rapidly, like he's running towards a fight with his brothers and his friends and yet he feels an itch under his skin still. Sliding his hands up, Kevin winds them around Ryland's neck, pushing up and kissing back more, until Ryland's tangling their tongues together.

The wind picks up their hair and Kevin can feel Ryland's hand bunching in the fabric of his shirt and it's so heady that when he pulls back, he's panting for breath. His fingers tingle and he can only stare at Ryland, a smile slowly coming onto Kevin's face.

"Hi,"

"Hi," says Ryland softly, a grin breaking out onto his face before they kiss again, content to stand in a garden of metal and flowers on the rooftop and kiss.

I just LOVE the thought of Kevin making FLOWERS to wind down. Winding down by making flowers that he gives out. ♥

Thank you!

This is a great AU. I love that Kevin's is a creative power rather than a destructive power but to tell you honestly, Layla in Sky High had the same powers as Kevin and she was kick ass.

Thank you! I saw the prompt and since I remember about..y'know, zip of Captain Planet (other than nifty rings etc), I decided to just...spin my own. And I've never seen/heard of Sky High...so I can't judge.

But thank you for your review!
