mayqueen517: (MOLLY PIRATES)
[personal profile] mayqueen517
So, on Saturday, myself, my Mom, and my Mom's best friend Cina (who is basically my Aunt, really) drove down to Myrtle Beach. On the way down, it was an interesting ride, for it to only be three and a half hours, I found out that my Mom and Cina are boring half the time and hilarious the rest of the time.

XD

No, seriously, jokes aside, we had mix CDs that Mom and I both made. What's hilarious about that is that on Mom's there were about...five or six songs that I'd put on mine. In almost the same order!

Great minds think alike or something like that. ^_^

We made really good time, honestly. Usually, when I go to the beach with Theresa and Jamie, it takes us about four and a half, maybe five hours, but that's generally because of two things. 1.) There's always more traffic, and 2.) My Mom likes driving a lot faster than Theresa. XD

The Prince Resort is a lovely, lovely, lovely place, and if you ever decide to go to Myrtle Beach, seriously check into staying there. Beautiful room, full kitchen, full bath, a washer and dryer IN YOUR ROOM, a full fridge. And just. Simply beautiful.

We asked for an ocean front if they had them, and they said they didn't, yet when we got to the room...we DID. The way I figure, it was a corner room, so it counts as an ocean VIEW. (Also, in most places, corner rooms are 20-30 bucks cheaper, and our room...for one night, was only 58 bucks. SERIOUSLY.)

So after checking in, getting in, fixing our hair and the like, we got a little bit lost while trying to find somewhere to eat. It should be mentioned that we got a wee bit lost while finding a hotel. We didn't make reservations online, so we went to a few places.

So by the time we got ready, it was already a little bit before the show, and Cina wanted to be there when the doors opened, because of her leg. She broke it a few months back and had to have surgery and then have to have another surgery to repair the first surgery bullshit. Etc. So we ended up getting there around 7:30 and promptly lost Cina after having our tickets checked out.

The problem I had with the house of blues is that they didn't allow cameras. Which fucking sucked, because we had AMAZING spots. But, ah well. I would have snuck the camera in, however, my jacket's a thin thermal type thing and it showed that I had a camera. You could see the shape of it, and of course the worker there had to ask.

But, it's cool.

Mom and I wandered around, trying to find her, before we grabbed something to eat at the House of Blues. Let me say this: Bar food = NEVER AGAIN FOR CHRISTINA.

Seriously, I had the worst hot dog known to man. Thankfully, I wasn't queasy with it, so there is that, I guess? We wandered around a little more, checking things out since neither of us had been to the House of Blues before.

Found our spot, and proceeded to wait for the openers.

The thing about Flogging Molly openers is that there's at least two, and generally, Mom and I end up liking one of them more than the other. This time, I fucking loved both of them.

The Architects were really really good, straight up punk rock, and oh god, their guitarist cracked my shit up. He looked JUST LIKE one of the characters from Guitar Hero. The Axel Steel guy? Tight jeans, sneakers, jean vest, black t-shirt, long straight hair. JUST. LIKE. AXEL STEEL.

During their set, Mom and I were watching this window above the stage, which we're assuming was the dressing room, and every so often a member of Flogging Molly would wander by. It was like Flogging Molly bingo, LOL!

Then Frank Turner came on and OH MY GOD, SO ADORABLE. And then he sang and THEN he spoke and omg, he's British and it was all I could do to not squeal and want to pinch his cheeks. Aside from, y'know, yay shallow! His stuff was absolutely fucking amazing.

After that, we set about waiting for Flogging Molly.

One thing I did notice about this show was that there were and TON of Marines and other service men there. It made for an interesting experience, because for the entirety of The Architecht's set and most of Frank Turner's, there were some dickfaces who decided my tits made a good handhold as they went down the stairs.

Motherfuckers.

But there was a lovely Marine who planted himself beside of me and in front of my Mom and protected us, along with two other girls. One guy made a grab for my boobs at one point, and this guy just grabbed his wrist and "helped" him up the stairs.

It was kind of delightful, not gonna lie.

I've dug around online and found the set-list for the Charlotte show (which was Friday) and it followed as such:

Paddy’s Lament
Likes of You Again
Swagger
Requiem for a Dying Song
Every Dog has Its Day
Worst Day Since Yesterday
Drunken Lullabies
Won’t Make a Fool Out Of Me
Man With No Country
Wanderlust
Us of Lesser Gods
Factory Girls
Float
Punch Drunk Grinning Soul
Tobacco Island
Rebels of the Sacred Heart
Devils Dance Floor
If I Ever Leave This World Alive
Salty Dog
Lightning Storm
What’s Left of the Flag

---Encore---
Wrong Company
Black Friday Rule
Seven Deadly Sins

It's pretty similar to ours, save that there were some songs switched around. Like, Requiem was before Likes Of You Again and Swagger and What's Left Of The Flag was before Lightning Storm, so not much difference.

Words can honestly not describe the amazing show I witnessed.

Live, Flogging Molly are bombast and soul; rage and heart; melody and love. Their music sings to your soul if you let it. Saturday night blew me away like no other concert that I've ever been to. Six guys and one girl make you dance, laugh, sing, ache, and laugh some more.

The thing about any and all concerts is that the band feeds off the crowd and the crowd feeds off the band and it goes in this beautiful loop. By the time that Flogging Molly came to the stage, the crowd was pumped, thanks to The Architects and especially Frank Turner.

There was a hum in the air, the anticipation rising as the House of Blues turned the lights down and their intro music started. The crowd started moving, the pit starting to swirl with delight and the moment that the curtain was pulled aside and you could see the band coming to the stage, there was this roar in the venue.

Onstage, there was a moment of soaking it in, every single member of the band taking in the sight and sound of 2000 people primed for the first song.

Paddy's Lament starts out with a simple crunch of guitar, and then the drums, fiddle, and banjo kick in. From the moment Dave King opened his mouth to sing the crowd was singing with him.

That's the way it was throughout the entire show. At one point, during one of their louder songs (Swagger), the crowd was so loud that I couldn't actually hear Dave singing. And we were fairly close to the speakers.

(Later, when I talked to Matt (the accordionist) and Nate (the bassist), they told me that there were times that even with monitors and the like, the crowd sometimes were drowning them out ONSTAGE.)

There's not any video up yet for the Myrtle Beach show and I doubt there really will be, just because I didn't see too many cameras going off. But to give you an idea of how Swagger sets the crowd alight, here's some other video of it:

As you can see, the crowd just. Goes wild. They've been doing the lead in from the end of Likes Of You Again straight into Swagger and it's always amazing and the crowd KNOWS it's going to happen. The pit starts jumping and then when that guitar kicks in...it explodes.

When they started Factory Girls, Dave started introducing Bridget. They got married back in 2008, I believe, and OH MY GOD, THEY ARE SO SWEET. Seriously, you guys. SO FUCKING SWEET. Dave introduced her as, "The most beautiful woman to walk this earth, Bridget Regan, ladies and gentlemen."

HI, EXCUSE ME WHILE I EXPLODE.

Seriously, back in 2006, Flogging Molly released a DVD called Whiskey On A Sunday and in it, there's a moment where Dave talks about Bridget and says, "She brings it down. And she. She makes me very happy."

It is one of the sweetest moments and that was BEFORE anyone knew they were involved. I mean, granted, you kind of think it, because omg. So precious. But Dave looks so happy, you guys. He looks happy, he SOUNDS content and the smile he gave her when she came up to sing her part during Factory Girls, he just. Ugh, my HEART.

There was another moment where Dave was giving Dennis complete and utter hell for his shirt. Dennis had apparently been saying his shirt was green, when in fact it was...yellowish. Mom described it as Chartreuse, which fits. My favorite thing was Dave saying, "THAT is not fucking green, that is something you put on a fucking sandwich."

So, when it came time for the encore, I knew that Dave was going to come out and do something acoustically, just because it's apparently one of his favorite things to do. But when he came out and started singing The Wrong Company I just. Started BAWLING.

I don't even know why, seriously. I was just crying, because it's always, always, always been one of my favorite songs and one I never thought I'd hear live. And it just. Turned me into a soppy mess. Because I'm that girl.

So, after the stage lights came up, I saw Nate go into the crowd like he always does and I went straight over there. I've met Nate and Dennis the most, because I've met them at every single show I've seen. They're all amazing guys, but I'm so partial to Nate and Dennis.

At any rate, I got to meet Nate (bassist), Dennis (guitarist), George (drummer), and Matt (accordionist) and they were all EXTREMELY nice. I got a hug from all of them except for George, because he was on the stage and I wasn't. XD

But, like I said, the guys are so so so lovely. When I told Nate that I'd driven down with my Mom from Charlotte, he looked at me and just gave me this HUGE grin and wrapped me up in a hug. Dennis looked at me and told me that I was "fucking awesome", and George. GEORGE MADE MY HEART MELT A LITTLE.

I was levered up so I could reach the stage to shake his hand and when I told him that, he kissed my hand and squeezed it and told me thank you and was SO sincere. I was all wibbly.

Back in March of 08, I was so fucking nervous when meeting Matt that my hands were all shaky and this time when I went up to Matt, I ended up going, "So, I've got two things to tell you."

And Matt is awesome because he just slung his arm around my shoulders and said, "Okay. Cool, lay it on me. Lay it on me and take it off your shoulders, let's talk this out."

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

There were some completely amusing moments, like while having Dennis sign my Whiskey On A Sunday photo booklet, he noticed that I had his signature on it twice before. I told him that they were from 2007 and 2008 and so he proceeded to date his newest signature. XD

Nate basically held my hand for a moment or two while some girl interrupted me to proposition him. And I got hugs from them and a couple of kisses on the cheek.

Basically, they are some of the sweetest people you will ever meet, and my favorite thing about meeting them is that how you see them in interviews, that's how they are in real life. They all take time to talk to each and every fan and say something personal to them, even if it's just a quick couple of questions.

It's just. Ugh, my heart.

So, Mom found Cina during one of the opening sets, right? And found that she'd been basically adopted by three Marines who were taking care of her. These three guys gave up their seat for Cina, they also escorted her everywhere so she wouldn't get crushed, they bought her drinks, they guarded her purse.

So we figured that after all that, the best thing to do was to invite them to go grab something to eat with us.

We went to a pretty standard pancake house and these guys. Good god. I laughed so hard I nearly wet myself a few times. They were amazing guys, just. Very honorable.

The youngest one, a delightful young man by the name of Sam, decided (after we were all done eating) that he was going to set up a practical joke for the next people at the table. He unscrewed the tops of the salt, pepper, sugar, and the syrup.

...I'm guessing you can see where this is going.

Anyways, he forgot he'd unscrewed the top to the syrup and picked it up. And had it promptly spill everywhere.

I swear to god, it was so hilarious because he looked SO SHOCKED. Everyone else moved away and laughed and then they decided that it was MY fault because I LOOKED guilty. (Sadly, this is not the first time it's happened. XD)

After we left there, we were heading down the Grand Strand (where all the main touristy shops etc are) and we passed by the Crazy Horse Gentleman's Club.

Oh yeah.

So, one of the Marines started heckling Mom good-naturedly. And in the end of it all...Myself, my Mom, Cina, three Marines found ourselves....at the Crazy Horse.

It was one of those things that I found myself watching the most bored strippers in the entire known universe and wondering...how the fuck did I end up there?

The point of that is that you KNOW it was bad when three Marines come over and tell you that they are BORED, CAN WE GO NOW?

...YEAH.

So, all in all, I can honestly say it was the best fucking night in recent memory. While I hated the no cameras thing, I loved the venue. Just absolutely loved it. It was so eclectic and the band. Oh god, this band makes my heart ache sometimes, just for how they are.

And in the end, their music reaches out and grabs me. And that's all I could ask for.

The next morning, Mom and I took a walk out to the Cherry Grove pier which was so BEAUTIFUL. The water was calm and clear and there were so many birds around. They weren't exactly my favorite, because birds freak me out like crazy. (Hi, I'm Christina and I'm a pussy. XD)

And here are our pictures!

This is how calm the ocean was the next morning. Seriously, at the edge of the picture, that's the point where waves were breaking onto the shore.

The curve that you see in the walkway of the pier is from where it washed out a few years ago in that spot. The repaired most of the whole thing that needed it, but the curve is from where they had to make new spots for the pylons to supprt the pier.

This is the view of the water from on top of the pier, and it's probably about...tummy level to me, which is relatively deep, actually. So clear and CALM. Good lord.

We saw a ton of birds like I said. An egret was chilling out around us and I was cool with him. It was the seagulls (I hate seagulls) and other birds that kept freaking me out. XD

Birds!

So, there was this one bird that we kept whistling at who was pretty cool with us. It kept hopping towards us like it was curious and then it'd fly off (and that's when I'd flinch). At one point, Mom kept griping because it wouldn't look at her. Then she got this picture:

LITTLE BIRDY GLARE. IT IS HILARIOUS.

Meeeeeeeee on the pier.

So, I don't know if you can see it, but there were two birds on top of the sign who were watching us intently. I didn't realize they were there when I ran over to get my picture under the sign. (Because why not, right?) And when I threw up my arms, they flew overhead...prompting me to shriek and cover my head.

*facepalm*

But whatev. Got my picture!

After that, we headed back to our room, packed things up, and headed out. It was such an amazingly fun trip, short as it was. And as much as I love Christy and Jamie, I don't think I would have had quite the same amount or type of fun, I think. I love doing stuff like this with my Mom, and while Cina gets on my nerves, I love that crazy ass woman too. ♥

And as a parting shot, a sign that I caught sight of on our way out of the Grand Strand.

Ohhh, South Carolina. XD
