Mike met William the same way many unfortunates meet William. A story of how he'd known a person's family to be kind and gentle. Kind enough to overlook eccentricities for a handful of money. William never changes. It just won't happen. It's the same way he'll always lure people to him, Mike thinks, as he slides his hand along a barely cold cheek, closing the eyes and feeling the heat of fresh blood rush through him. The body below him is barely marked, much like his own had been the first time he'd awoken, different and still the same.

Two marks on his neck were the only indication of how things changed.

William had been a friend of the family for years, always in the periphery of Mike's knowledge. He was the family friend that his mother brought the good china out for. He was the family friend that always left family dinners more tense, but Mike never thought anything of him. He didn't know William well enough.

But Mike knew that he had to be polite to him, because he was a family friend. So when William had offered to take him around to some of the social events in the area, he hadn't declined. William Beckett was a feared and respected name, and, as his mother put it, it would do the Carden name good to be seen in that company.

"Your family is quite the exception to many rules," William had said to him that night, smiling at him in the carriage, a careful and polite smile. The night air coming through the windows was chilly, but pleasant and Mike didn't think he really needed to answer William.

But clearly the man was waiting for something.

"Thank you. I'm sure my Mother would be delighted to hear that from you," Mike said, content to leave it at that and wonder just what William was planning. A man like William Beckett didn't make idle comments, comments that had nothing behind them. Mike chanced a glance over at the other man, seeing that teasing smile in place and it made Mike want to punch him. To see if it'll get a reaction.

"Oh, she has. But I fear that she doesn't quite know how much of an exception the Roberts family is."

"Carden. I'm of the Carden family."

"Of course, of course. However, you cannot be a Carden without first being a Roberts," William had said, smiling easily at him, a hint of something lurking behind warm eyes and pale cheeks. Mike had felt unease boiling in him at that comment, but he hadn't known how things would change.

He's never sure what would have happened if he had known how things would change.

They had walked into the party, into the event as the hosts had touted it. William was kind enough to let Mike walk in first, but Mike knew that something about this whole party was off.

Later, Mike will think back on it and realize that the hint of something behind William's eyes had been hunger. Hunger and greed.

But then, he'd only slipped into the party, making the same idle conversation that everyone made. He'd smiled at the young women, dancing with each of them in turn as William wandered over and handed them drink after drink. There had been a pleasant flush starting under his skin, the familiar feeling of alcohol working through his system.

Mike had enjoyed it, letting the lady in his arms demurely laugh and protest just enough before giving in to getting some air. These events usually were more than boring, but Mike couldn't help but have a moment of thanks that William had brought him to this one. Especially when he was kissing the woman in his arms, feeling her press and sigh against him.

She had grazed her teeth against his lower lip, giving him just long enough to think, 'ow, hey,' before she'd buried her face in his neck. Alarm bells had started in his head, clanging and ringing and there are times when he looks back on that night, he wishes he had pushed her off.

The next thing he had remembered was William's low voice, coaxing him through something. Later, he would recognize it as the moment that William was letting him feed for the first time. Taking slow swallows of thick, warm blood that burned like fire and ached like the cold, and all he could think was pain.

He had concentrated on it, gasping for air as William had stroked his hair, murmuring softly as his eyesight had dimmed.

There are days when Mike hates that William is the first thing he saw when he opened his eyes for the first time as a Vampire.

"You, my dearest, are going to enjoy this new life," William said, practically purring as he ran his fingers through Mike's hair, eyes hooded and lazy as he watched Mike through them. Mike who hadn't been able to help gasping hard, shaking as the change kept rolling through him, making him groan thickly.

"Come, you need to feed."

William didn't force him into it, but Mike remembers the encompassing hunger, the pain from needing to feed and being unsure how. But William had gently taught him, being more gentle than Mike would have thought as they fed together. William's cheeks flushed in the dim lighting, eyes bright and fangs extended.

Mike wondered if he looked the same, but he just knows that the only thing he could do when morning started closing in on them was to cling to William.

William had murmured to him and just before the sun crested over the windows had pulled the top of a coffin over them.

"Sleep. I'll be here to teach you everything when you wake, Michael."
