Happy birthday,
hector_rashbaum!!
Tomorrow is
hector_rashbaum's birthday!
SO, I present:

Download the mix!

1.) Uncle John's Band - Grateful Dead
Lyric: Will you come with me? wont you come with me?
Wo, oh, what I want to know, will you come with me?
Snippet From Road Dogs: And it's impossible not to smile during a goofy car sing-and-dance-along, especially when someone so...not-goofy is so into it.
Okay, so Kevin might have to admit this isn't the worst way to spend a week.
2.) Glory Days - Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
Lyric: Glory days well they'll pass you by
Glory days in the wink of a young girl's eye
Snippet From Road Dogs: Zac glances over and smiles, honestly relieved to see Kevin's smiling a little, too. "Nobody tried to kill me, or you, or threw anything at either of us, or cried, or said they never wanted to see anyone again, so...I think it went okay, yeah."
Kevin's smile brightened a little, and he switched out Zac's iPod for his own. "Then I guess this calls for a sing-along."
3.) Don't Charge Me For The Crime - Jonas Brothers
Lyric: It's all a flash but who would know
How the story would unfold
Don't charge me for the crime
Snippet From What I Did On My Summer Vacation (By Joe Jonas, Age 19): "Dude. Dude. We're going out for drinks. Come with us. Or are you wearing, like, a Disney ankle bracelet? We'll...karaoke, or some shit."
Joe thinks for about thirty seconds about Nick and Kevin and Dad, about being underage, about tabloids and alcohol and scandal, and then he switches to how much fun he's had already, about how ridiculous Nate is now and how much worse he'll be in an hour, and it's not even a question.
"If you've got a screwdriver, I can get the ankle bracelet off for a few hours."
BONUS SONG FOR What I Did On My Summer Vacation (By Joe Jonas, Age 19)
Pour Some Sugar On Me - Def Leppard
Snippet From What I Did On My Summer Vacation (By Joe Jonas, Age 19): He sings stupid hair metal, sucks Nate off in the bathroom with something like two hundred fans outside; Nick tells him later if he does that again to stick to songs that don't require him to take his shirt off. Apparently Disney wasn't thrilled.
4.) Between A Man And A Woman - Flogging Molly
Lyric: Neither rhyme nor a reason
Will make us think the same
You tell me I'm half crazy
But you're insane
Snippet From What I Did On My Summer Vacation (By Joe Jonas, Age 19): "We'll dedicate a song to the happy couple."
"Between a Man and a Jonas?"
.....
"Are you properly corrupted, or should we, like, rob a bank before you go?"
"I could probably use the extra cash," Joe says, starts gathering up his clothes. "Keep in touch, dude."
"Get the right pants this time, Jonas."
5.) Good Girls Go Bad [Cash Cash Remix] - Cobra Starship
Lyric: You heard that I was trouble
But you couldn't resist
Snippet From Employee Of The Month: Carden just shrugs, slides off the counter, leg sliding along the whole length of Kevin's arm. Goosebumps follow the rough slide of denim; Kevin rubs his left hand over his arm almost absently.
"Told you you'd like it," Carden says, bumps against him and holds there for just long enough it has to be deliberate, just long enough Kevin looks up at him. "I'm out. Study hard, Jonas, I'll be cheating off you tomorrow."
6.) Toasted Skin - The Academy Is...
Lyric: We introduced our friends to yours
And we would laugh while we were ignored
And from coast to coast we'll soon disperse
But let's live tonight like it's our first
Snippet From Employee Of The Month: "You should probably," Carden pulls back just enough to murmur, and the whisper of air against his lips makes Kevin feel kind of melty, "just keep your hands out of pants entirely, Jonas. Apparently it's a little advanced for you."
Not that Kevin ever has a retort when Carden makes fun of him, but this time he's happy to blame it on the way his head is swimming from kissing Carden, wanting to kiss him more, so instead of even trying to think of something he leans and closes the little bit of distance, draws Carden in for another kiss.
"Oh." Carden pulls back again, expression going totally smug when Kevin tries not to let him, tries to lean in and keep kissing. "You gave Bill your brother's number."
7.) Do You Know What I'm Seeing (Alternate Version) Panic! At The Disco
Lyric: I know it's sad that I never gave a damn about the weather,
And it never gave a damn about me.
No, it never gave a damn about me.
Snippet From Falling Through The Night, Rising From The Ashes: The heater kicks on, hums too loudly for three or four seconds before it fades into the background; Kevin gives up pretending he's actually in the mood to eat and leans over Mike to put his slice back in the box. "They'd like you if they knew you."
"Would they get to know me?"
They both know the answer to that; Kevin doesn't bother to say it.
8.) I and Love and You - The Avett Brothers
Lyric: One foot in and one foot back
But it don't pay, to live like that
So i cut the ties and i jumped the tracks
For never to return
Snippet From Falling Through The Night, Rising From The Ashes: "You okay?"
"I...will be. I think. I don't – what comes next?"
Mike nods, reaches for Kevin's hand – there's no ring there, anymore, no point in even pretending it means anything now – and pulls him down to the couch. "We'll figure it out."
9.) Believe - Hanson
Lyric: Oh, I'd love to believe
It's not only me that's longing
Only just to believe
So believe
'Cause I want to believe
I want to believe
Snippet From When I'm Around Her: "I'm gay, Kevin," Mike says, like he has to force the words out, like he's admitting to something Kevin doesn't already know.
"I know," is all he says, all he can think to say.
10.) Please Be Mine - Jonas Brothers
Lyric: How can I prove my love
If they all think I'm not good enough
But I'll be there forever
You will see that it's better
Snippet From When I'm Around Her: "I – are you okay?" Kevin asks, wants to ask if we're okay, if that ruined everything, if she was right and they should have pretended, if -
"I love you," Mike says, cuts her off, and for the first time in two weeks there's no part of her that thinks he doesn't mean it.
11.) Keep The Mood - Empires
Lyric: I went there.
I traded in my memories.
It's gonna happen.
We'll make it.
Snippet From Under The Sea: Nick's shoes are resting on the sand, pajama bottoms and t-shirt folded neatly next to them, just past the high tide marker. Dents in the soft sand give way to footprints where the sand's damp, firm enough to hold the shape, and those give way to...waves. The footprints stop, washed away by the lapping of saltwater against the sand, and there's nothing but ocean as far as Kevin can see. Joe's gripping his arm so tightly it hurts, hurts a lot, but his face is so ashen Kevin can't bring himself to make him let go; he just grits his teeth against the pain and watches the surface for any sign that their brother's just gone for a late-night swim.
....
This was supposed to get easier.
12.) Behind The Sea (Alternate Version) - Panic! At The Disco
Lyric: Those watermelon smiles
Just can't ripen underwater
Just can't ripen underwater
The men all played along
To marching drums
And boy did they have fun
Behind the sea
Snippet From Under The Sea:
"It's not even a choice for you, is it?" Kevin asks, tries not to sound accusatory. Joe sits up on his elbows, looks down at Kevin, so much trouble swirling in his dark eyes Kevin has to look away.
"It's not that simple," Joe says, voice rough.
"I didn't say it was simple. But it's true – me or him, there's no contest."
Joe doesn't argue, not even a token resistance, just dips his head and kisses Kevin, lips tasting faintly of Diet Coke.
.....
Joe nods, and Kevin smiles, tries for reassuring. He swims backwards, watches Joe, lets Zac guide him until Joe and Nick are just shapes on the horizon, melting into each other, and Zac tells him to take a breath, pulls him under.
13.) Don't Let It Fool You - Empires
Lyric: Once you're here,
Time will begin to creep on us.
Every night, every worry comes in.
Don't let it fool you.
Snippet From I Don't Blame You For Being You: So Mike ignores the stupid voice in the back of his head, ignores the little tug in his chest every time Kevin's face falls when he invites Mike to spend the night and Mike has to say no, and keeps right on making his stupid-ass mistake.
BONUS SONG FOR I Don't Blame You For Being You
A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More "Touch Me" - Fall Out Boy
Snippet: "You know I don't like to be kept in the dark," William says, smirks a little at his own pun, and Mike's stomach sinks.
"Uh, okay."
William glides into the room - Mike suspects he was that supernaturally graceful back when he was still human – and sits next to Mike, eyes glinting like they always do when he gets ready to play one of his stupid fucking power games, fuck with Mike's head.
"I like to know what's going on. Healthy curiosity, I suppose."
"Good thing you're not a cat."
William grins, bares his fangs. "I asked Brendon to follow you, a few weeks ago, find out where you're spending all your time."
Mike's going to murder the little fucker.
14.) You're Crashing, But You're No Wave - Fall Out Boy
Lyric: The press prays for whichever headline's worse
Case open, case shut,
But you could pay to close it like a casket,
Baby boy can't lift his headache head,
Isn't it tragic
Wo wo wo wo
Snippet From I Don't Blame You For Being You: Kevin, who's slid down the wall, slumped on the ground; Kevin who's so fucking pale Mike's heart drops to his fucking feet, who didn't do a damn thing wrong, who doesn't deserve this, who doesn't deserve any of this, whose breathing is coming too hard, too slow, who's looking at him like he can make this all better.
And he can't, he can't even begin to, but there's something he can do; Mike bites at his wrist, tears at the flesh like a rabid fucking dog until he tastes blood. He climbs off Bill, presses his wrist to Kevin's lips, uses his free hand to pinch Kevin's nostrils shut so his only choice is to drink or suffocate. Kevin struggles, weakly, for just a second, then opens his mouth against Mike's bloody arm and sucks.
....
"We'll talk when you wake up,"
15.) Honorable Mention - Fall Out Boy
Lyric: I served out my detention
And in the end I got an honorable mention
Snippet From Road Dogs: Eleventy, Hot Messes: Sixty-Nine:
When he first talked about this with Pete, it had seemed like an awesome idea; of course, Nick hadn't taken into account that most of his exposure to FBR has been through Mike, and Mike is a completely normal human being. None of Mike's friends can say the same about themselves, though.
BONUS SONG FOR Road Dogs: Eleventy, Hot Messes: Sixty-Nine
Bring It (Snakes On A Plane) - Cobra Starship
Snippet: "I think he'll strike out," Beckett says, nodding towards Garbo.
Nick's so taken aback by something coming out of Beckett's mouth with no innuendo or proposition attached he forgets to ignore him. "Nah. He hasn't struck out yet."
Too late, he realizes his mistake. Beckett presses in close, grins. "I'll suck your dick if I'm right."
Nick keeps facing forward but cants his eyes towards Bill, smirks a little. "I'll suck yours if you don't talk for the rest of the game."
16.) Do You Wanna Touch - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
Lyric: My, my, my
Whiskey and rye
Don't it make you feel so fine
Right or wrong
Don't it turn you on
Can't you see we're wastin' time, yeah
Do you wanna touch (Yeah)
Snippet From Road Dogs: Eleventy, Hot Messes: Sixty-Nine: "Apparently, Nick was gonna blow him if he didn't talk the rest of the day."
Mike snorts. "That's the world's safest bet. Smart kid," he says, then shifts Kevin off his lap and swats at his ass. "You should probably go take your position before Joe thinks he's supposed to play first."
Joe, actually, is already jogging over from center field, so Kevin hurries out to head him off. The game might have turned into a giant mess, but there's never any mess big enough to let Joe anywhere important. That's number one on Nick's list of Softball Rules, for many very good reasons.
....
Butcher and Siska apparently stopped keeping score sometime before the game actually started; they proclaim the final score as Road Dogs, eleventy, Hot Messes, sixty-nine, and nobody, not even Nick, bothers to argue.
~~~
Sometimes, when I'm choosing songs, I tend to go for the overall feel of a song, rather than the lyrics. The thing about that is sometimes when you listen and reread something, they actually mesh up. For example, when I chose Keep The Mood by Empires for Under The Sea, I was thinking of the feeling of the song, of that simple and moody piano. The more I listened to it, the more I feel like it's from Joe to Nick, and that worked startlingly well.
I used a lot of alternate versions of songs for this one, because I think sometimes they worked better with the scenes I chose. The alternate versions of some of the Panic! At The Disco songs work for me so much better sonically, but also with that whole feeling vs. the lyrics.
This wasn't as hard as I thought, but harder than I expected. Which sounds weird, but I wanted to choose the right scenes, but in my mind, all of the scenes are right, honestly. There were so many scenes that I wanted to use, but didn't fit my formatting. Hence some of the bonus songs.
So, happy birthday,
hector_rashbaum, I hope it's awesome and amazing as you. You deserve the best birthday ever.
