Half Light (Pre-Tom Conrad/Sean Van Vleet) Rating: G
So I took some prompts from various people, including the dear
mindscomeloose and settled down to write today. It's been a long while since I wrote ANYTHING, let alone these boys. However, I'm pretty happy with it.
So anyways, here you go!
Title: Half Light
Pairing: Eventual Tom Conrad/Sean Van Vleet
Rating: G
Word Count: 529
Disclaimer: OWN NOTHING. YOU KNOW THE DRILL. The quote at the beginning is from Chuck Palahniuk which was part of the prompt. It's not the strictest following of the prompt, but whatever. I WROTE SOMETHING!
Summary: Go love someone just because
Go love someone just because
He sees it in glimpses, the thin script tracing over and over on the poster hanging in the doorway. He knows the quote in that weird way that he knows the capitals of the states by heart. He remembers hearing and seeing Ryan Ross talk about it.
Tom doesn't think about it until Sean walks by, talking animatedly on his phone. The sun hits his hair in the way that makes Tom's hands ache for his camera or for his phone. Anything to capture the halo of sunshine around him.
He knows of Sean more than he knows him personally. He has countless photos of him from different angles. He has one of his hands cradling a coffee cup. He has one of him crouched on a sidewalk, admiring a subtle piece of graffitti.
They run in the same crowds, is the thing. They both know the same people and Tom can never make himself say anything until he watches Sean eye the poster. The Study Room - part cafe and part bookshop - is covered in quotes at varying places, but this is the first time Tom's ever seen someone actually put a poster-sized one up.
"Think I should leave it?" Sean's voice is clear and easy, ringing across the sidewalk as Tom startles. He blinks, clearing his throat as he tentatively steps over.
"I. Uh, I mean, it's your place, so I guess if you want to?"
Sean hums lightly, gently detatching the poster as he steps inside the shop. The door stays open in invitation and Tom hesitantly steps through at Sean's wave.
"You know who said this?" Sean asks, looking over at him as he digs tape out of a drawer.
"Chuck Palahniuk. There's a larger chunk of it that puts that into perspective," Tom says, looking around the shop, taking in the quotes along the walls and the carpets overlapping. There's a section for the books full of plush couches and chairs and a section for the cafe proper. It reminds Tom of Jon's apartment in a weird way.
"I think I'm gonna put it behind the register. What do you think?"
And Sean's smiling, holding it up and looking back at Tom like they've known each other for years. It feels like that to Tom. Tom wants to walk out, but instead, he walks over and takes the tape, nodding.
"Looks good," he says, smoothing the tape down as his hands meet Sean's briefly before Sean lets go. Sean studies his face intently for a moment before Tom sees something dawn over his face.
"We had that sociology class together, didn't we?"
"Yeah, with that stupid fucking paper?"
"Hey, I liked that paper," Sean says, grinning as Tom snorts, feeling at ease finally. Sean leads him over to a table, settling into the chair with ease. The lights are low with natural light and Tom clears his throat to stop from grimacing.
"You kept taking pictures of me," Sean says finally as Tom stares at him, "I wouldn't mind seeing them."
"I. Sorry?"
"I'm saying you should show me the pictures you took of me last year," Sean says, grinning as Tom blinks at him, a smile creeping over his face finally.
"I think I can manage that."
