Man, I used to watch Inspector Gadget all the TIME when I was a kid.

Jon has, over the years, gotten used to waking up to find someone staring at him. It's a weird habit of both Tom's and Ryan's, because Jon has fucking radar for people with the creepy staring thing, so opening his eyes to find someone watching isn't a shock.

Thing is, though, he hasn't exactly had time to get used to a motherfucking zombie watching him sleep. For what it's worth, though, he does feel really fucking bad every single morning when he remembers the undead thing he just smacked across the face is Tom.

"Gruurgh," is all Zomrad says, most mornings. Sometimes he snaps a picture of Jon, halfway between panic and remorse, still sleep-rumpled and wild on adrenaline.

"Gruurgh, asshole," Jon says back, and goes to find some goddamn coffee.

The pretty, willing girl from the show turns into the pretty girl Jon's dating, the pretty girl who's got some time off and wants to visit him in Chicago.

Suddenly Jon's faced with a problem he kind of never expected - how, exactly, do you prepare someone for the fact you keep your best friend's rotting undead zombie self as a pet? Even if Sean were home to take Tom for the week, his fridge is kind of full of an assortment of animal brains, and the place kind of reeks (partly of undead rotting zombie, partly of too much air freshener).

Still. This is his life now, so the easiest way is probably...

"Uh, I have pets, are you allergic to anything? Cat, dog, zombie?"

"...everyone's allergic to zombie."

"Not if he doesn't bite you. He's pretty tame."

Nicole blinks at him, obviously confused. Jon's pretty sure he was using a serious enough voice, there, but maybe the idea is so absurd it would have to be a joke.

But she doesn't walk away, just shrugs and steps aside so he can unlock the door. Zomrad's curled up on the couch, napping, half-eaten cow brain on a plate on the coffee table.

"Aw," Nicole says, when his arms twitch, "he's dreaming."

Jon's not kidding himself about why they keep Zomrad; the whole zombie thing started in LA, not far from where he and Ryan were holed up writing, so he's seen what happens when zombies roam free, both to people and to the zombies who go after the wrong people. And he should be scared, probably, but there's too much of Tom left - the refusal to go anywhere without a guitar or camera, the flicker of life in his eyes, the creepy staring thing - for him to act on it.

He's not really sure Sean gets it, so much, he seems to think this is more entertaining than anything else. He's written three songs called some variation of "gruurgh".

Zomrad eats animal brains from a few local farms; Jon doesn't know what kind of deal Ryan J charmed them into and he doesn't really want to. They talked, briefly, about ways to get him human brains, but neither one of them want him developing a taste for them.

He wears a shock collar, which they're both :/ and :D about. Because who doesn't want to shock an obnoxious friend sometimes (Max calls them sociopaths for that. Loser.) He, thankfully, retained his potty abilities, so no awkward lessons or giant litterboxes or whatever, and Jon walks him twice a day - after dark, before sunrise.

when lauren told sean that chrissy was not happy lately, he decided that could not be so, and that the two of them (plus help) had to do something about it.

he didn't stop to remember that money might be a slight problem. oh well, he wouldn't let such a small thing hinder his AWESOME PLANS.

awesome plans which included leftover fireworks (because you know there was a surplus left over after the proposal of awesome), a kick ass barbeque, and booze. because what was a party without booze? and pepsi for lauren, 'cause margaritas were way too hoity toity for the likes of empires.

so lauren brings chrissy over, and she's just about moved to tears when everyone jumps out like they're at a surprise party, and ambush her with hugs.

the rest of the night? full of food and friends and laughs. just the thing to make someone forgot all their problems.
